Why residents are concerned

• A permanent change to an iconic view. The proposed arch would be a large new monument at the gateway to Arlington Memorial Bridge — one of the capital’s most carefully protected viewsheds.
• The public deserves a full say. Residents want to be certain the proposal receives complete public review and comment before any approvals are finalized.
• Questions of cost and precedent. It is not yet clear who would pay to build and maintain a monument of this scale, or what precedent it sets for the National Mall area.
• Once it’s built, it’s permanent. A monument like this cannot easily be undone — which is exactly why getting the decision right now matters.

Timeline

1. A monumental arch at Arlington Memorial Bridge is proposed and enters federal review.
2. The National Capital Planning Commission and Commission of Fine Arts review the design and site.
3. Public comment periods open — the stage at which resident input carries the most weight.
4. Federal decision-makers weigh approvals for design, funding, and construction.
5. If every approval is granted, final design and construction would follow.
